The things people ask.

From “is the 24/7 cover real?” to “why does my fuse box keep tripping?” — answered plainly, in roughly the order people ask them.

About Bestfix

01
Who actually turns up?

Balazs. Bestfix Ltd has a single director and every Google review names the same engineer, so the person who answers the phone is the person who does the work. It's the main practical advantage of a one-engineer firm: nothing gets lost between an office, a scheduler and a subcontractor.

Are you electricians or plumbers?

Both. Bestfix covers domestic and commercial electrical work and plumbing and heating — leaks and pipework, boilers, radiators and gas safety inspections. That's deliberate rather than accidental: a great many household faults sit exactly on the line between the two trades, and having one engineer for both removes the second visit and the finger-pointing.

Are you NICEIC-approved and Gas Safe registered?

Bestfix describes itself as NICEIC-approved and Gas Safe registered. Both registers are public and searchable, so before any gas or notifiable electrical work it is always worth asking to see the registration and checking it yourself — that's true of any firm, and a genuine engineer will never mind being asked.

How long has Bestfix been going?

Bestfix Ltd was incorporated in March 2018 and is an active company at Companies House. It's a young, small business rather than an old established one — what the reviews actually praise is the response time and the diagnosis, not a decades-long history.

Call-outs, hours and pricing

02
Do you really cover 24 hours?

Bestfix advertises Monday to Sunday, 24 hours, 365 days a year, and the Google Business Profile lists the same. Reviews describe out-of-hours call-outs being answered — including an engineer arriving 45 minutes after a call placed past 10pm on a Saturday night.

Is it an emergency or can it wait until morning?

Ring and describe it. Water actively escaping, a burning smell from a socket or consumer unit, no heating in a house with a baby or an elderly resident, or a suspected gas leak all count as now. A dripping tap, a dead socket in a spare room or a radiator with a cold top can usually wait for a booked visit — and being told so on the phone costs you nothing.

What does a job cost?

Bestfix doesn't publish a price list, because an honest number depends on what the fault turns out to be. Get the job described on the phone and agree the basis before work starts. Reviewers consistently describe the cost as reasonable — one wrote that the cost for a Saturday-night call-out was "extremely reasonable".

Do you work for landlords and businesses as well as homeowners?

Yes — domestic and commercial. Landlords tend to want EICRs and annual gas safety checks; commercial clients tend to want testing, certification and someone who can attend quickly when something fails during trading hours.

Electrical work & certificates

03
What is an EICR and do I need one?

An EICR is an Electrical Installation Condition Report — a periodic inspection and test of a fixed installation, written up with coded observations. Private landlords in England must have one at least every five years and give a copy to their tenants. Homeowners aren't legally required to have one, but it is the standard check before buying, selling or insuring a property. There's a fuller explanation on our EICR and landlord safety page.

What's the difference between an EICR, an EIC and a Minor Works certificate?

An EICR reports on the condition of an existing installation. An EIC (Electrical Installation Certificate) is issued for new work — a new circuit, a new consumer unit, a rewire. A Minor Electrical Installation Works certificate covers smaller alterations that don't create a new circuit, such as adding a socket to an existing one.

My fuse box keeps tripping — what's going on?

A breaker or RCD that trips is doing its job; the question is what it's protecting you from. It's usually a faulty appliance, moisture in an outside circuit or light fitting, a damaged cable, or an accumulation of small earth leakage across several circuits that finally tips one device over. Repeatedly resetting it without finding the cause is the one thing worth avoiding. Our emergency guide walks through how to narrow it down safely.

Plumbing, heating & gas

04
My boiler has lost pressure — is that a leak?

Not necessarily. A sealed heating system loses pressure slowly through small leaks on pipework, radiator valves or the boiler itself, but pressure also drops after bleeding radiators, and a failed expansion vessel or a weeping pressure relief valve produces the same symptom. If it needs topping up more than a couple of times a year, something is wrong and it's worth investigating rather than repeating.

Can you move a radiator for a new kitchen or redecoration?

Yes — moving and replacing radiators is routine Bestfix work, including changing valves and rebalancing the system afterwards so that moving one radiator doesn't leave another one cold.

Do landlords need a gas safety check every year?

Yes. In England and Wales, landlords must have every gas appliance and flue in a let property checked annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer, give the tenant a copy of the record within 28 days, and give new tenants a copy at the start of the tenancy. Records must be kept for two years.

Do you repair washing machines and dishwashers?

No — appliance repairs get referred to a repairer Bestfix trusts, which is a more useful answer than taking on a trade that isn't ours. The supply side is ours though: the spur, socket, isolator or cable feeding the appliance, and the plumbing in and out of it.
